costs of facilities

November 6th 2013 MDT

I just found this reference to a study of costs of ped and bike infrastructure inprovements http://katana.hsrc.unc.edu/cms/downloads/Countermeasure_Costs_Report_Oct2013.pdf You can see a summary table at the end.  This might be useful information except that the surveyed costs range by orders of magnitude.  For instance: Bike lane: median cost $89K per mile average cost $133K per mile Min cost $5K per mile Max cost $536K per mile (somebody paid half a million for a mile of bike lane!) I'm guessing the max ...Continue Reading

Good point. It's a jungle out there. A 3rd District Court Judge was hit and killed in the road 10 days ago. Danged if you do, danged if you don't! Thanks Herm, for your feedback.  As it turns out, the sidewalk is often more dangerous than the road.  It really depends on the number of entry points and hidden driveways, but many/most drivers are not looking for cyclists (relatively fast moving sidewalk vehicles) to cross their exit path.  Most peds. are slow enough that there are not conflicts.  Having said that, I too sometimes ride on the wider sidewalks downtown - there are fewer driveways, particularly along Main st., and I ride very slow a ...Continue Reading

Re: Fwd: Logan City Parks, Paths & Trails map

Obviously I'm no professional or purist. But if a road is heavily used by heavy cars and heavier trucks, and a sidewalk is empty, I bump over to the sidewalk many times. I guess I'd rather be sidewalk-wrong than dead-right in the road. Thanks Russ.  I chafe at the notion of implementing a facility design that invites a bicycle rider to do something that our education efforts have to convince them is unsafe.  Of course, I have no problem with the Boulevard SUP because it crosses no driveways or intersections.  Well, except for the problem I have with safety and intuitiveness of the endpoint designs. Re: Fwd: Logan City Parks, Paths & Trails map

Bob, In areas where a Shared-Use Pathway (10' wide path) terminates into a normal width sidewalk (~5' wide) a curb cut and proper signage will need to be provided telling cyclist to exit the pathway to the adjacent street. In cases where the Shared-Use Pathway (10' wide path) doesn't narrow down to a standard sidewalk, cyclist will be allowed to stay on the Shared-Use Pathway, even if it is directly adjacent to a street (similar to the Boulevard pathway section right now). We haven't nailed down exactly what ...Continue Reading
