Frederick Law Olmsted is revered as America’s first and finest landscape architect and a pioneer conservationist. Less well remembered, Henry Hobson Richardson was, in his time, the nation’s best known and most influential architect. In the decades after the Civil War, these two titans of design profoundly influenced how Americans came to interact with the built and natural world.

Join the Maryland Department of Planning and the Smart Growth Network as historian Hugh Howard, author of Architects of an American Landscape, looks at how these two great friends and frequent collaborators shaped a legacy that included Manhattan’s Central Park, Boston’s Trinity Church, Yosemite and Niagara Falls, the U.S. Capitol precinct, Vanderbilt’s Biltmore, some of the nation’s first public libraries and suburban train stations, as well other indelible designs.
