Lean Thinking Before, During and After Your Planning Process

Speakers| Leonardo Vazquez, AICP

Communities are increasingly seeking creative ways to cost-effectively serve residents and businesses and attract new investment. To do this, many local governments and planning firms are turning to Lean Six Sigma, a process improvement approach that has been used in private industry for decades to reduce waste, ensure profitability, and provide a superior customer experience. The City of Dublin, Ohio has a history of innovative, forward-thinking management and is known for performance excellence - but recognizes there is always room for improvement. Dublin embraced a private sector mindset with the use of Lean Six Sigma tools and created an inter-departmental “Innovation” team resulting in efficient, customer-driven processes with measurable improvements from projects ranging from Board & Commission administration to stakeholder engagement processes. This interactive session is for planning professionals of all types – public sector, private sector, and anything in between. Participants will receive an introduction to basic Lean Six Sigma concepts and practical process improvement tools that can be applied immediately with colleagues and customers to implement meaningful, customer-focused change in the communities they serve. An ASQ Certified Quality Engineer/Master Black Belt and members of the City of Dublin’s Development Department will facilitate the session.
