Hello:
We would like to enlist your efforts in our bicycle planning process.

UDOT has installed special detection for bicycles at traffic signals across the state. A kml file showing the location of each of these signals is attached. You will need Google Earth to open it. If you zoom into the circle "bulls eyes" on the map and click on the link provided, you can see the intersections where the signals have been placed and the direction of travel they are designed to regulate. Also attached is a configuration showing the pavement markings associated with the new signals.

We are in the process of deciding at which signals we should first place the bicycle detection markings, as well as where to add NEW bicycle detection signals. Both of those processes will take place as funding allows. We would like your input to help us prioritize these activities so that we can move forward when resources become available.

Note that:
  • The radar detection we use picks up all modes of travel (i.e. cars, trucks, cyclists) without any work needed to differentiate between the modes.
  • The traffic signals on MAIN through corridors will change automatically, even if cyclists or other vehicles are not there to trigger them, so we will NOT need to place the bicycle detection symbols in the through lanes on main corridors or left turns on main corridors where permissive operations are permitted (i.e. turning left on green or a flashing yellow arrow).

Please give us your input on the following items:
  1. The locations shown on the map in your area--that are NOT on major corridors--where you think the bicycle detection symbols should first be placed.
  2. The locations on UDOT roads (intersections and direction of travel) in your area where you think new bicycle detection signals should be added.
  3. Please send us your responses by September 15th
If you have questions about this process, please forward them to us by responding to this email. Thank you in advance for you help in this important process.
