Safe Routes 2 School Funding

Hey BPAC,

Do you know a school where parents don't feel comfortable letting their children walk or bike there? Lets fix that! The information below is a call for applications to Safe Routes to School funding, which can help communities implement trails, bike lanes, sidewalks, crossing improvements, or even programs like a 'walking school bus' within 2 miles of a school.

All it takes is coordination with a city and a school, and though it doesn't hurt, NO MATCHING FUNDS ARE REQUIRED.  So I hope you'll help me find ways we can take advantage of this great funding source up here in cache valley, and give our kids the freedom to walk and bike to school.

Please read information below, and get in touch with any questions you may have.

To Whom It May Concern:

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) would like to announce that approximately $1.2 million dollars per fiscal year is available for local Safe Routes to School (SRTS) projects throughout the state.

Due to changes in the SRTS program, State funds will now be utilized for Safe Routes to School (SRTS) projects. This should allow for a greater number of SRTS projects, increased flexibility with the types of projects that can be funded, and maximize the amount of funding going directly to capital improvements. Local matching funds are no longer required.

UDOT is soliciting applications for the next three funding cycles, (fiscal years 2019-2021) for both SRTS infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects. Applications are due by 5:00 PM on March 14th, 2018.

Any public elementary, middle, junior high, or public charter, or school district serving children in grades kindergarten through eighth grade, recognized by the Department of Education, may participate in a SRTS project. In addition, organizations, such as state, regional, or local agencies, may act on behalf of the participating school(s). The applicant must be the Primary Sponsor and owner of the property on which the proposed project is located, and have applicable right-of-way and utility information available. Funding will not be awarded to an agency that does not own the right-of-way within which the project will be constructed.

Infrastructure projects should directly support increased safety and convenience for school children to bicycle and/or walk to and from school. Projects must be within 2 miles of the participating school(s) and, applications must provide a current Student Neighborhood Access Program (SNAP) Plan of the school’s walking boundaries, clearly identifying the safest walking routes.
