EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

After nearly 15-years in his role as the Center's executive director, Stephen Goldsmith has decided it's time to open the door for a new generation of leadership. We're seeking an individual to work as alongside our associate director and carry forward our mission to inspire civic engagement and leadership, invite creative urban solutions and expand our understanding of the ecology of cities.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Launched by a group of activists, practitioners, and academics in 2005, the Center for the Living City holds the singular distinction of being the only urbanist organization founded in collaboration with Jane Jacobs. With our vision of cities as vibrant, adaptive and equitable communities created by and for everyone, we work to expand understanding of the ecology of cities; we inspire civic engagement and leadership; we invite creative urban solutions.
We seek an executive director with a deep knowledge of the iconic work of Jane Jacobs, who understands the complexities of cities, including the importance of keen observation, organic change and authentic community engagement. The director will use that knowledge to envision, administer and build programs consistent with the vision.
We envision the job initially to be part-time, with the potential to become full-time in the future.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The executive director of the Center for the Living City has overall strategic, fundraising and operational responsibility for the center’s staff, programs, expansion and execution of its mission.
LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT
The executive director will:
- Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence, fundraising, program evaluation, communications, and financial and administrative management; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals set by the Board.
- Actively engage and energize the center’s board members, event committees, alumni, partnering organizations, and funders.
- Support a strong governing board of directors; serve as ex-officio of each committee; seek and build board involvement.
FUNDRAISING & COMMUNICATIONS
The executive director will:
- Develop and expand revenue generating and fundraising activities.
- Identify, develop and pursue potential individual donors.
- Deepen and refine all communications—from web presence to external relations with special focus on social media platforms.
- Develop new and maintain current strategic relationships to garner new opportunities for community engagement.
- Collect and disseminate emerging stories about Jane Jacobs’s impact and ongoing public discussion of her work.
PLANNING & NEW BUSINESS
The executive director will:
- Design new strategies for expansion in the U.S. and globally.
- Build partnerships in new markets, establishing relationships with funders and community leaders at each expansion site.
QUALIFICATIONS
The director will be thoroughly committed to and passionate about the Center’s mission. All candidates should have proven leadership, fundraising, communication, grant writing and relationship management experience. The director will be entrepreneurial, will love making “the ask,” will build and maintain strong relationships with donors, know how to work a room, display strong skills for inspiring groups and individuals, and be comfortable in many settings.
Specific requirements include but are not limited to:
- Knowledge of nonprofit operations, ideally with a track record of effectively leading a performance- and outcome-based organization and staff. Must offer specific examples of having developed and put into action strategies to move an organization to the next stage of growth.
- Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation. Should have on-the-ground experience working with or in some kind of community-based effort.
- Able to travel regularly, especially to New York City.
- Experience with on-the-ground involvement in communities, such as activism, journalism or similar work that takes place out of an office.
- Familiarity with New York City and potential funders there.
- Excellence in organizational management, with the ability to coach staff, manage and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget.
- Past success working with a Board of Directors, ability to cultivate existing board member relationships.
- Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience. Can engage and inspire a wide range of stakeholders and cultures. Social media expertise is valued.
- Strong written and verbal skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
- An action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse groups of people.
- Passion, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed.
