Welcome to our June Newsletter! In this edition you will find information about funding and resources for your community to prepare for or recover from natural disasters, as well as other news and information about fire hazards as we head into wildfire season. We also have information about opportunities to send representatives to state-sponsored emergency preparedness training. There are also several community development programs seeking applicants in June and July, including rural design assistance, farmer's market marketing assistance and an opportunity to apply for youth serving in AmeriCorps to help in your community.

ASSISTANCE OPPORTUNITIES

HAZARD MITIGATION GRANT PROGRAM

Funds available for declared disaster restoration and long-term mitigation

The Utah Department of Public Safety, Emergency Management Division facilitates grants to local governments to implement long-term hazard mitigation measures after a major disaster declaration.The purpose of the program is to reduce the loss of life and property due to natural disasters and to enable mitigation measures to be implemented during the immediate recovery from a disaster declaration.

2019 FARMER'S MARKET PROMOTION PROGRAM

Grant Application Period is Open through June 18, 2019

The purpose of the Farmers Market Promotion Program (FMPP) is to increase domestic consumption of, and access to, locally and regionally produced agricultural products, and to develop new market opportunities for farm and ranch operations serving local markets. 
 

Entities that are eligible to apply include:

  • Agricultural businesses
  • Agricultural cooperatives
  • Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) networks
  • CSA associations
  • Economic development corporations
  • Local governments

THE CITIZEN'S INSTITUTE ON RURAL DESIGN

Request for Applications open through July 22, 2019

The Citizens’ Institute on Rural Design™ will continue its tradition of offering local design workshops that address specific community challenges, and also create a new cohort learning program that will engage rural leaders from up to 20 additional communities.

All rural communities of 50,000 or less are eligible to apply for the CIRD local workshop and learning cohort opportunities.

Building off of previous studies on Utah CoalUintah Basin Oil, and Zero-Growth Planning, and supplemented with additional research, the Utah Community Development Office has assembled this guide as a one-stop resource to assist energy and natural resource communities in building and maintaining resiliency.

AMERICORPS NCCC ASSISTANCE

Requests for Applications open for projects running November 2019 to July 2020 

AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) is a federal, national service program for 18-24 year-olds from diverse backgrounds, that strengthens communities and develops leaders through team-based national and community service. NCCC provides the ‘people power’ for short-term, high-impact projects that address critical community needs.

FEMA GRANTS $1 MILLION FOR FIRE RESTORATION

DENVER – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced several grants for the State of Utah that will make more than $1 million dollars available for reseeding a number of burn scar areas as well as for the purchase of mobile weather stations that can provide real-time data of conditions at burn scar sites.

The first grant is providing $1 million to the Utah Department of Natural Resouces (DNR) for its reseeding program. The funds will be used for post fire soil stabilization and habitat rehabilitation efforts for for areas impacted by the Dollar Ridge, Hilltop, and Pole Creek/Bald Mountain Fires.  Efforts include aerial seeding of 38,434 acres with native grasses to also mitigate against invasive species.
