Re: road tailings as trail surfacing

Hey Dayton,

We've used recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) in a few trails where otherwise we would use road base or crusher fines, and it works ok, especially if mixed with stabilizers and binders and gets some compaction. It's not smooth like new asphalt and won't last like asphalt, but it's not a bad surface.  However, if you can afford good crusher fines, I think the surface will last longer.

All - curious if anyone has this type of example around them that can speak to usefulness/durability/environmental impact:

We have an opportunity to recycle road tailings (grindings of the top few inches of asphalt) as surfacing for flat portions the Blacksmith Fork Canyon Connector Trail.

Has anyone worked with this material as a trail surface before?
Can you provide any input as to caution/success/design criteria?
Seeing it in other roadway applications as a crushed gravel substitute seems promising, but I'd like to know if anyone has used it successfully in a trail application.

Thanks!
